Celebrated chef, restaurateur and food writer Mark Hix is known for his original take on British gastronomy.
Mark Hix MBE is one of Britain’s most respected chefs, restaurateurs and food writers, known for his distinctive approach to British seasonal cooking and his longstanding relationships with fishermen, farmers and producers.
Mark’s career includes 17 years at Caprice Holdings, where he became Chef Director, before leaving in 2007 to establish HIX Restaurants. His celebrated restaurants across London and Dorset helped shape modern British dining, championing seasonal ingredients and the people behind them.
Mark is an award-winning author with 12 cookbooks to his name. He spent 14 years as food writer for The Independent on Saturday and has written for The Telegraph, GQ and City AM. He also contributes to Dorset Magazine and Marshwood Vale, and his cookbooks are available digitally through ckbk.
Today, Mark shares his passion for food through a collection of personal dining and foraging experiences in his native Dorset. At Mark’s Pop Up in Lyme Regis, he cooks intimate, informal suppers at The Pop Up Kitchen, with themed evenings celebrating local produce, seasonal ingredients and flavours from further afield. Following the closure of The Oyster & Fish House in December 2024, the pop-up marks a welcome return to cooking for guests in the town.
At Mark’s Kitchen Table, guests join him at his home in Charmouth, overlooking the Dorset coast, for a six-course lunch or dinner with wine. Gathered around his kitchen island, they can watch him cook while sharing stories of local producers, his life in restaurants and his fishing and foraging adventures. The experience is also available for private bookings.
His Hix & Wild foraging experiences, co-hosted with local forager Nick Cadwell, take guests into the Dorset countryside and along the coast to discover wild ingredients. Each day follows the seasons, from spring greens and summer seaweeds to autumn mushrooms, finishing with a six-course dinner at Mark’s Kitchen Table featuring the day’s finds.
Mark was awarded an MBE for services to hospitality in the 2017 New Year Honours.
